"An art historian might describe my work as early Renaissance in reverse. That is, figures are directly observed for accuracy and expressiveness, but they are in backgrounds that have a medieval quality, full of symbols and an emotive use of color. I am very interested in expressive animated figures and luminous environments. These reoccurring themes have centered my work over the past 25 years. Figures are closely observed for subtle and poignant body language. Faces express an inner thought process. Backgrounds of reflective water later become backgrounds of reflective sky. Finally, the most recent works have become luminous environments, symbolizing the subject’s internalized emotions as nature in amplified form. There are recurring images of balance and burden, challenge and celebration, part of the experience of many contemporary women."
