Platter: African cuisine with a twist (Oregonian)

Alem Gebrehiwot is opening Afrique Bistro -- a two-story, 80-seat restaurant that spotlights the diverse cuisine of the world's second-largest continent. Gebrehiwot, a 48-year-old Ethiopia native who studied food science at Oregon State University, says Portland deserves an African restaurant that goes beyond the now-familiar flavors of Ethiopian and Eritrean cooking.

May teacher of the month: Nancy Treneman (Curry County Reporter)

Nancy Treneman, science teacher at Gold Beach High School, has been named teacher of the month. She earned her undergraduate degrees at Oregon State University and Portland State University. Her master's degree was earned at Oregon State and UC Davis. She is certified to teach Biology, Integrated Sciences, and Physics.

New brewer has all the right ingredients (Estacada News)

Sarah Billick, who holds a bachelor's degree in food science, with a minor in fermentation science, from Oregon State University, first became interested in the industry while participating in Future For Agriculture (formerly known as Future Farmers of America).

Fearless Brewing hires an assistant Brewster (Oregonian)

Sarah Billick has joined Fearless Brewing Co. as the new brewer. The Estacada brewpub is best known for its signature Fearless Scottish Ale, and has been aggressively expanding territory over the past year, and is now distributed throughout the Portland metro area, west to Spirit Mt. Casino, east to Bend and south to Eugene. Billick holds a degree in Food Science Technology with an option in Fermentation Science from Oregon State University.
