Lecture 19: Integrated Biorefineries (PDF with notes)

This lecture explores types of integrated biorefineries and the potential conversion methods used.

Typically, a biorefinery is a facility that converts biomass into various chemical products. Pulping wood, biodiesel production, and anaerobic digesters can all be considered biorefining industries. An integrated biorefinery means more than one type of conversion in being used. A primary goal of integration is to reduce waste and utilizing all waste. The forest products industry and the petroleum industry are excellent examples of integration.
