Jeehye Lee received the OSU All-University Clara L. Simerville Award for International Education and a Gilman International Scholarship to fund her study abroad including research involving toxicology and water resources.
The Simerville award recognizes her contributions to cross-cultural awareness and service to OSU. Lee, who grew up in South Korea until junior high, and later in Beaverton, Oregon, served as the nationally elected Region VI undergraduate vice president for the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences Society (MANRRS). She was awarded a prestigious Gilman International Scholarship to study in South Korea at Kyungnam University in Masan. While there, she met with shellfish industry leaders to examine health policies surrounding bacterial outbreaks, as part of her BRR Water Resources and International Degree research concerning Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacterial growth conditions in Pacific oysters. Dr. Claudia Hase, Department of Biomedical Research, served as Jee's mentor.
"My strong commitment to international understanding involves my community activities as well as academic achievement, which have both provided me with increased ability to understand different cultures. My research combines both biological science and international avenues involving economic and cultural aspects. My long term career goal is to become an environmental science educator or a researcher who cares about deeper knowledge in science to provide assistance in my community, as well as demonstrate innovative ideas for better sustainable living..."
