Bioresource Research degree

BioResource Research (BRR): an interdisciplinary biosciences major centered around student research. Students take science core courses, complete an option (bioscience/natural resource specialization) and do a research project of their choice with a faculty mentor. This research opportunity is unmatched in any other program at OSU.

BRR is positioned at the intersection of the major food, water, health and resource challenges facing the world, and provides BRR graduates with the tools to address them. BRR students are looking for more than the usual OSU education. They like to see the relevancy of their education, make a difference, and gain work experience while reaching their educational goals.

100% of BRR graduates have found jobs or been admitted to graduate or professional schools within three months of graduating.

Learning Outcomes: 
  • Retain and articulate the fundamental concepts of biosciences and bioresource sciences, and of the physical and mathematical sciences that support these fields.

Your lower-division coursework will provide you with the fundamentals. With guidance from your research mentor, you will put together a program of upper division option courses that will support your research, complement your interests, and help you prepare for your future.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific method by designing an experiment, collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.

BRR provides a research experience unparalleled at OSU.

  • Convey the meaning of research results in written and oral format, to both professionals and the general public.

Communicating science concisely and accurately not only influences the future directions of science and medicine, but is necessary in order to have the best laws and policies.

  • Master and discuss the important contemporary issues in the specific discipline of the BRR option and research project.

By the time you have finished your research project, you will be one of the world’s experts in that field.

  • Demonstrate professionalism, including critical thinking, a strong work ethic, and the ability to contribute to a team. 

Employers and graduate programs are looking for the “soft skills” you will develop in the course of your BRR major.

 

These learning outcomes will be assessed through a written research proposal, course work, research activities, data presentation, thesis, public seminar, and final defense. Furthermore, the mentor and research committee will provide feedback based on performance in the laboratory, thesis, seminar, and final defense.
