BETSY HARTLEY received her Bachelor of Science degree in
Agricultural Education from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis
Obispo. She concentrated on
communications and agri-business. Even
though she is a third generation Californian, she will tell you that she has
visited all but one state in the United States and chose to make Oregon her
home. She has lived in Oregon for more
than 10 years and her family grows Christmas trees and has a small Filbert
orchard.
Betsy worked at the National 4-H Council in Chevy Chase Maryland for three years shortly after graduating from Cal Poly. She picked up and moved to Washington D. C. without having ever visited, simply for the adventure of learning a new town and meeting new friends. She helped to hire and manage interns for the 4-H based leadership programs that were designed and delivered by the National 4-H Council. She also served as the Program Coordinator for the Citizenship Washington D. C. Focus program.
Betsy spent close to 10 years working for the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation in California, Oregon and the Western United States. She worked in many capacities, but the focus of her work was on volunteer development, fundraising and developing and delivering training for new staff.
Betsy assumed the role of Director of External Relations and Marketing for the College of Agricultural Sciences in February 2005. She works in a variety of ways with stakeholders, alumni, students, faculty and friends. No two days are ever the same, which is just fine by her! Betsy works with departments on developing marketing materials, supporting alumni activities and focuses on positioning the College and the Experiment Stations to connect with external audiences in new and meaningful ways. She also works to support the E. R. Jackman Board and its officers. E. R. Jackman is a volunteer group that began in 1967 and continues to promote the work of the College. They use their endowment earnings each year to sponsor student clubs and activities.
Betsy's main volunteer passion is working with the Oregon FFA Association and its core of hard working high school agriculture teachers and students leaders. She also serves as a Benton County Fair Board member, recently helped with several contests for the Oregon Dairy Ambassador program and serves on the Summer Agriculture Institute (SAI) Board. The SAI program brings school teachers representing just about every grade level, to the OSU campus for one week each summer where they learn about using agriculture in their own classrooms.
Betsy is an active and involved aunt to Katie, Justin and Joey. She enjoys photography, traveling and meeting new people. She is passionate about anything related to agriculture - especially helping people understand where their food comes from and how hard those in food-related businesses work to keep our food supply healthy and abundant.
