Genetics Program

Genetics Program

The College of Agricultural Sciences administers the University program in genetics leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The Genetics Program faculty is drawn from qualified geneticists throughout the University, and the curriculum is tailored to provide students with an integrated program leading to a graduate degree in genetics. It is also possible to enroll in graduate programs in departments of the colleges of Science, Agricultural Sciences, and Forestry and receive a minor in genetics.

It is expected that a student enrolling in the Genetics Program will have completed one year of physics and biology, two years of chemistry, an introductory genetics course, and mathematics through calculus. For the MS and Ph.D. degrees in genetics, students take the core genetics courses, biochemistry (equivalent to BB 550, BB 551), statistics, and graduate-level genetics courses chosen from the list prepared by the genetics faculty. Students participate in research designed to prepare them for careers in genetics. The director of the Genetics Program is Walt Ream, Ph.D.
