Hatch Formula Grant Program

National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA), USDA-Supported Research

Within USDA, NIFA supports research, education, and extension activities at partner Land Grant Institutions through three main funding mechanisms:

  • formula grants (Hatch and Multistate projects);
  • competitive grants such as the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI);
  • Non-competitive grants and cooperative agreements.

Hatch is a nationally supported program with funds from USDA-NIFA and matched by state general funds and various commodity and grower organizations in each state. These funds are provided to Experiment Stations in each state to support basic infrastructure, scientific expertise, and facilities for conducting research. The Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES) scientists contribute to research projects at the state and multistate level under the five USDA/NIFA challenge areas and additional Oregon themes.
