Oregon State Student Engineers Design a Barley Malter

(Oregon Live.com) A group of Oregon State University engineering students didn't wait to graduate before endowing their alma mater: For their senior project, they designed and built an innovative barley malter that allows OSU to now teach every step of brewing, from the barley field and hop yard to the bottling line.

The new malter allows easy testing of the malting quality of experimental varieties of barley, and it gives students in OSU's fermentation science program -- one of two in the country focusing on brewing -- the chance for a hands-on education in the entire brewing process. (Read more...)

Land Grant Colleges Sow Organic Seeds

(Capital Press) The line between urban and rural is getting blurry, (James) Cassidy said. He sees students from both backgrounds come into his classes out of curiosity and then change their majors, some going into research, some planning their own farms.

"They don't have enough experience to be jaded about agriculture.  "Urban kids are searching for authenticity, for something honest, and they want to identify with it. ...
