This free workshop presented by Science Education PartnershipS (SEPS) was designed for high school science teachers interested in understanding how genomic sequence data is obtained, analyzed, and applied to a variety of research questions in health, ecology, agriculture, and environmental science.
The workshop provided an overview of current genome research and allowed teachers to try out several research techniques, including PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and bacterial transformation. No prior experience in molecular biology was needed!
Teachers piloted several Bio-Rad Explorer Biotechnology Kits designed for high school classrooms. A set of equipment, including a PCR machine and gel electrophoresis units, is available for use in Oregon classrooms during the school year. Kari van Zee (vanzeek@science.oregonstate.edu) is available to provide in-classroom support.
A weeklong workshop designed to offer high school teachers a hands-on introduction to molecular biology, genomics, and biotechnology, supported in part by ORB.
10-12 August 2005, Salem Oregon 4H Camp
ORB student intern Shannon Bell performed DNA extractions with campers at a camp designed to establish a bridge between the Latino community and OSU academic opportunities.
