Student Success Stories

Presenting academic and creative work in a formal setting is a mark of true accomplishment in undergraduate studies. Working with faculty members who are recognized as national and international leaders in their fields, our students study alternative fuels, the safety of our food supply, environmental protection and a wide range of other issues that affect our lives every day.

February 2012 Student of the Month: Warren Gawlik

Warren has put into practice his own style of team building as president of the OSU Turfgrass Club. Warren implemented a club calendar so club members knew what was expected of them ahead of time.  He employed weekly emails, texting and Facebook to communicate.  He found that club meetings don’t have to be entirely academic; having fun also creates a natural environment to build strong relationships that are essential to building a team.

December 2011 Student of the Month: Jon Calhoun

Jon has had opportunity to put into practice his own leadership style as the owner of a groundskeeper/landscape design business, as a manager and prep cook at a pizza restaurant, as an officer in the Agricultural Executive Council, Collegiate FFA and as a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.  He is currently a Fellow in the Leadership Academy

November 2011 Student of the Month: Jessica Budge

Jessica has been serving as the 2011 Oregon Dairy Princess-Ambassador.  Over the course of her service, she has made over 100 appearances throughout the state of Oregon doing presentations in schools and Farmer’s Markets.  She has found it rewarding to work with kids and see their faces light up when they learn something new.

October Student of the Month: Mee-ya Monnin

Mee-ya is on a six month internship with Dr. Markus Horning of the Marine Mammal Institute, studying the thermoregulation of Weddell seals.

The Campbell’s Leadership Award will be presented to Patti Aron at the national meeting of the Institute of Food Technologists in Chicago, July, 17-20, 2010.  This Award recognizes her exemplary leadership through her involvement in the IFT Student Association at the Western regional, and national levels of IFT.

Young farmer bucks aging trend (Capital Press)

After graduating from college, many twenty-somethings don't always head straight into the career field they studied. Not Nick Moxley. The 23-year-old from Bonanza graduated in the spring with a bachelor's degree in agricultural business management from Oregon State University. He then drove straight to his nearly 400-acre farm near Klamath Falls in southern Oregon and got to work.

Cindy Schumacher grew up on a dairy farm in the Stayton area, graduated from Stayton High School and earned three bachelor's degrees from Oregon State University: animal science, natural resources and education. She worked summers at Doerfler Farms through college.

Teen sweeps sheep meet (Capital Press)

This fall, Allison Boyce will be a freshman at Oregon State University, where she plans to prepare to be either a high school counselor or an English teacher. The winnings from her market lamb championships since she entered 4-H in the fourth grade will help pay for her first year of college. She recalled paying $100 for her first market lamb grand champion. It sold for $2,000.

A group of 15 Oregon State University veterinary students is taking its show on the road, and it's asking the public to help. In anticipation of its third year of travel to Nicaragua in September to perform free veterinary exams and procedures, the International Veterinary Students' Association at OSU is scrambling to collect supplies and donations from the community.

Marisa DeWolfe, 18, and her mom, Pam, 61, will graduate from Central Oregon Community College with their associate degrees Saturday. Marisa is the youngest graduate in COCC's class of 2009, and her mother is the oldest. Next week they're moving to Corvallis to attend Oregon State University.
