FW: Undergraduate Student Achievement in Entomology AwardAs part of
our long-term strategy to encourage more undergraduate students to consider
Entomology as a career, the PIE Leadership voted this year to expand the number
of Award winners from one, to two per year. This year, we are pleased to
provide an early announcement of the two award winners for 2009. Each of the
following students will receive a $1,000 scholarship award, and up to $1,000 to
support their travel to the ESA meeting.
Melissa McKenney is a
BioResource Research major at Oregon State University with a minor in
Entomology. During her undergraduate career thus far, she has undertaken
multiple internships and experiences in entomology and has been involved in
several entomology outreach programs. Melissa has conducted research on honey
bees and native bee pollinators associated with cranberries on the Oregon coast.
Of particular significance is her contribution to characterization of floral
resources that compete with cranberries as foraging sources for bees. She
followed up this research with associated extension talks and publications that
have been recognized by the cranberry industry. For her accomplishments in this
work, Melissa has received several awards and scholarships.
