Friday, May 19, 2023

We kick off the weekend with a day on the Corvallis campus. Explore our Nash Hall classrooms and labs, or take a walk and visit some of the iconic buildings that make Oregon State University so special. Did you know that OSU makes its own ice cream? We will have the official food truck on site for you to sample at our welcome social.

  • Lab and Facility Tours: 1pm to 3:30pm
  • Mini Mock Practicum - test those systematics memory skills: 1pm to 3:30pm
  • OSU Campus Tours: 1pm to 3:30pm
  • Ice Cream Social 3:30pm to 5:00pm

All 1pm to 3:30pm activities will be running concurrently, so there are options to participate it multiple events.

Day Trip Options (Transportation and Lunch Provided)

Our Oregon backyard is full of opportunity, and we want to share that with you. Our faculty and students will accompany you on a field trip of your choice where you can experience wild and wonderful Oregon, or get a more in depth look at the research happening at the Oregon Hatchery Research Center or Hatfield Marine Science Center! If you want to stay close to Corvallis and embrace your artistic side we will also have fish printing and nature walks in and around Nash Hall.

Willamette River Float

About the trip: A guided float down the Willamette with FWCS faculty and grad students who work in that ecosystem. More details to come!
Timing: 10am to 3pm


Trip to Newport to Tour Hatfield 

About the trip: Join FWCS faculty and grad students for a tour of the Research Labs and the new Marine Sciences Building, as well as a dockwalk on the bayfront.
Timing: 8am to 3:30pm, Daytrip to Newport


Oregon Hatchery Research Center Tour

About the trip: Spend Saturday at the Oregon Hatchery Research Center touring the facility and viewing presentations about the research and projects supported by the center, led by director Seth White. There will be a provided lunch, and the opportunity for a fish dissection!
Timing: 9am to 3:30pm, Daytrip to Alsea


William L. Finley National Refuge Wildlife & Bird Walk

About trip: Take a walk with our faculty and students through William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge to look for local birds and other wildlife. With any luck the elk will accept our invitation and meet you there! 
Timing: 9am to 12pm, Morning trip in Corvallis


Gyotaku Fish Printing with Bruce Koike

About the trip: FWCS alumnus Bruce Koike (with help from our FW Club) will be running his popular Gyotaku fish printing workshop in Nash Hall. Learn more about the Gyotaku process.
Timing: 9:30am to 2:30pm, Corvallis Campus


Corvallis Campus Area Bird Walk

About the trip: The OSU Bird Nerds Club will guide participants through campus and some surrounding areas to observe the birds that make OSU their home. Take a stroll through the buildings and out to the covered bridge and interact with our undergraduates as you work on rounding out your Corvallis bird lists. 
Timing: 7am to 9am, Corvallis Campus


FWCS Dinner Celebration at the Philomath Scout Lodge (Shuttles Available)

5pm to 9pm

We invite you to join us for an evening of dinner, dancing, and storytelling as we celebrate all the wonderful people and tales of success that makes us who we are. Connect with old friends and make new ones, and share tales of all the adventures that you've had, and the ones that are in your future. 

We will have a short program, recognition of some distinguished graduates, and much more. We hope that you will come celebrate with us.

Brunch with Benny (Shuttles Available)

About the event: Join FWCS and Benny the Beaver as we end the weekend by looking into our future. We will highlight our students, give lightning talks on all of the amazing work we're doing, and give an update on the revised curriculum and what that means for current and future student success in agencies and organizations.

We will have a delicious brunch spread, and there will be photo opportunities with Benny the Beaver. 
Timing: 10:30am to 2pm
