AED 313

Objective:

Explores the agricultural education profession through this advanced form of early field experience. Observes a formal or non-formal agricultural education program and assists with instructional and non-instructional activities. Gains a better understanding of the day-to-day activities involved in facilitating an agricultural education program, whether formal (school-based) or non-formal (4-H, Extension, etc.).

Overview:

Early Field Experience (EFE) is an advanced form of field practicum designed to be taken by students interested in formal and informal agricultural education. Early Field Experience is a required class for students who are pursuing the Agricultural Education Minor and students who are interested in applying to the Agricultural Education Master's Program.  AED 313 is available during the following terms:

  • Fall (Corvallis Campus and Ecampus)

  • Winter (Ecampus)

  • Spring (Ecampus)

  • Summer terms (Ecampus)

The Student Learning Objectives for AED 313 are:

  1. To identify the role of professional educators and the scope of programs available in Agricultural Education.

  2. To evaluate collected materials and describe personal experiences in Agricultural Education.

  3. To develop observational skills, reflective writing ability, and practical experiences that will serve as a foundation for future coursework and career goals.

Steps for Enrolling in AED 313:

  1. Email KJ Joseph (kj.joseph@oregonstate.edu) to schedule a meeting to discuss your AED 313 placement. All students must meet with KJ Joseph no later than week 8 prior to the term in which they want to take AED 313 (e.g. if you want to take AED 313 in Spring Term, you must schedule and meet with KJ Joseph by Week 8 of Winter Term).

  2. During the meeting with KJ Joseph, students will discuss placement sites. Students may make suggestions for placement sites, however, students should not contact schools or placement sites to arrange their EFE. After meeting with KJ Joseph, you will receive confirmation via email and the next steps for contacting your placement site.

  3. Students completing their EFE with a School-Based Agricultural Education program must complete the TSPC Background Check before starting their observation. Background checks cost $61 and are valid for 3 years. Background checks can take up to 4-6 weeks and students must receive background clearance before going to their school placement - do not delay in completing this step!

    • To complete your background check, follow this link, and complete the steps listed at the bottom of the webpage (students should follow the steps for 1b "Applicant for student teaching or practicum.")

  4. AED 313 requires a Departmental Override. Students will be notified via email when they have received a department override and when they can enroll for AED 313.

AED 313 Pre-requisites:

  • Site placement - students are not responsible for coordinating their own placement sites, however, student preference is welcomed. KJ will reach out to the placement site for confirmation; students should not reach out to the cooperating educator. KJ will send you a placement confirmation email before the term starts.
  • Background check - A state-issued background check is required for all students wanting to do their EFE with a school-based agricultural education program. This background check can take up to 6 weeks to receive clearance. Background checks must be completed before you begin your observation hours. Background checks may be required for non-formal education programs, however, that is dependent on each placement.
