“It is most important to me that my paintings convey a certain mood. I want them to be felt by the viewer without his or her having to analyze or think about them. And so, I deliberately steer clear of rendering and high detail in favor of large simple shapes with minimal detail. Emile Gruppe speaks of the “power of suggestion” and I subscribe to this way of painting. Painting is like poetry and the old adage “less is more” certainly applies to both of these endeavors.
“My goal it to engage the viewer and allow him/her to interact with the painting rather than spell out every detail. Painting in this broad and loose style requires skill and lots of practice. If you don’t believe me then try it sometime. I have spent years devoted to this approach to painting and continue to develop and refine my painting process with the goal of creating strong simple statements in my work.”
