SCAPES

“Featuring imagery of the eastern Oregon landscape, my paintings area study in balance and tension, texture and form, repetition and reflection. Deconstructed images become abstract strokes with which I paint. The essence of these places remains intact, imparting a sense of familiarity to the resulting composed “scape”.

“Images are embedded in layers of beeswax, which gives the work a luminous quality and sense of depth. The process of transferring imagery to the wax surface rarely results in a perfect reproduction, leaving the opportunity for together and imperfect.

“Encaustic is an ancient medium that involves the use of raw beeswax as a painting medium. Melted wax is combined with resin and pigment to form a paint that is applied in its liquid state, from a heated palette. Each layer of wax is fused to previous layers with heat. Encaustic comes from the Greek “enkaustikos”, meaning “to burn in”. I source beeswax from the Northwest for my work.”
