Artist Statement:

"For me there has been a lifelong intertwining of language and art – which has resulted in my fascination with the brilliant color and pastiche of activities that comprise Latin American market places.  As a translator in many Spanish speaking countries (including ten years as a summer recruiter/translator/teacher for the Federal Migrant Education Program) I have always gravitated toward the markets/plazas which form the hub of life for these communities.  The market motif—its excitement and vitality-- has long influenced my painting repertoire.  I have hoped to portray the grit, multiple textures, and kaleidoscopic palette in my impressionist interpretations.  Recently I have been focusing on market place dogs—another fascinating aspect of mercado culture.  The abundance of local produce and fascinating market “families,” form a patchwork that never fails to attract me.”
