“I’m drawn by the formal aspects of landscape: the contrast of burnt crop stubble against pale ochre fields, the ordered linearity of trees planted in rows, the body-like undulations of contoured hills. The natural occurrence of black in a landscape is rare, and from a purely visual perspective, the flattening effect of a burnt field against a pale ground can be startling. Similarly, the artificially imposed geometry between a cultivated field and a managed forest blur perceptions of distance and dimensional space.”
