Lecture 10: Mechanical Conversions, Oil Extraction & Size Reduction (PDF with notes)

Mechanical conversion of biomass is an especially important method because it is a solid. Mechanical conversions of biomass include crushing oily biomass, densification, chipping and grinding and drying. That means it almost always has to be turned into a different kind of solid, liquid or gas to be used. A solid understanding of mechanical conversions, which we will offer in this lecture, is an important part of understanding how to utilize biomass for bioenergy.
