Graduate Program Fact Sheet

Graduate programs in the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology provide comprehensive course work and training to prepare prospective toxicologist and environmental health scientists for careers in academia, government, and industry.

Our integrated curriculum, combining both the biological and physical sciences, offers training and research opportunities in the fields of molecular and computational toxicology, environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology and risk assessment in support of our state-of-the-art and internationally competitive research, outreach and education missions.

Required core courses, advanced training in a specialized area, and interdisciplinary and team-based experiential learning and professional development opportunities together strengthen the student’s training in the basic sciences and ensure a thorough knowledge of the applied science of toxicology.

Toxicology | M.S. (Thesis), M.S. (Professional Masters) PhD

The Masters and PhD degrees provide students with a fundamental understanding of the interdisciplinary science of toxicology and also prepares them for leadership positions in research, academia, government, or professional services.

Note: The Professional Science Masters of Toxicology (PSMTOX) provides training for recent graduates of undergraduate programs looking to advance their study in Toxicology but do not wish to pursue research training and would like to

A student wishing to be admitted to any graduate program at Oregon State University must complete an application form, pay the application fee, and submit photocopies of all official transcripts. International students must also submit recent TOEFL scores and certify sufficient funding to complete the required degree. Program Requirements

  • For the MS, and PhD degrees, students are required to take a core curriculum plus elective courses connected with their particular area of specialization. Participation in the seminar program (a one-hour per week seminar) is mandatory.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacy, or other closely related fields
  • One year of biology
  • One year of organic chemistry
  • One year of physics
  • Mathematics through integral calculus
  • GPA of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale

Alumni Spotlight

Sarah Allan

Sarah Allan (PhD) is a Toxicologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). She evaluates the impacts of chemical spills and contaminated sites on marine habitats, fish, and wildlife, leading to the restoration of public natural resources. She also leads research on oil spill science and planning for spill response, injury assessment, and restoration in the Arctic. Toxicology is an interdisciplinary field and the PhD program at OSU prepared Sarah for a dynamic and multifaceted career.
