Faculty Resources

How can I help students grow professionally?

Career development doesn’t just happen in the workplace or through internships. Students need tools, resources and guidance in the classroom to help them take important steps toward career preparedness — from their freshman year onward. Here are some resources that can help you make careers part of the curriculum.

Academically incentivize students to take charge of their careers
  • Offer extra credit if a student attends a career event (or a number of them) or sits down with a career advisor or career assistant. Anyone from the Career Development Center is happy to sign proof-of-attendance forms.
  • Many professors ask students to write reflections on what they learned at career appointments or events to encourage deeper engagement. Students can also snap a picture or bring back employer swag from a career fair to show attendance. Consider making career development a requirement in your class.

Request a career presentation to your class.
  • Sample topics include (but are not limited to) career exploration, job search, resume/cover letters, interviewing, networking, using social media for careers, how to use Handshake, etc.

Attend a career event or fair.
  • Come network and meet employers who are interested in hiring your students. These events are a good way to stay in touch with what the industry needs and how educators can get students ready for what comes next. Register for events on Handshake.
  • Select university-wide events.
  • Contact Katie Harvey for CAS-specific events.

Refer students to career resources.
  • Encourage them to take their resume/cover letter to daily Career Development Center drop-in hours in the Kerr Administration Building, first floor.
  • Point them to career assessments and tools like “What Can I Do With My Major?” on Oregon State’s career website.
  • Encourage them to set up an appointment with their career advisor, Katie Harvey, through Handshake.
