Buzzing Through Life
I have my apiary at home and my agribusiness so that keeps me busy. I love anything and everything regarding bees and pollinators in general. I had the best time in Thailand learning more about the different types of pollinators there and getting to visit with local beekeepers. I also love country dancing, baking, and hiking. I have spent several years raising livestock and still have chickens and an alpaca at home. One of my favorite things to do is travel and explore new cultures and I have been fortunate to have so many opportunities at OSU to do that!
Keeping Beesy
When I started college I had never left North America, but have had many opportunities to explore the world through programs at Oregon State University attended the Honors College program in France, completed a study abroad program in Italy and lived in Chiang Mai, Thailand to complete my Honors College Thesis research on the biometrics of the stingless bee species Lepidotrigona flvabasis. This summer I will be teaching English in Macau through the College of Education. I had the most fun in Italy because I met the most amazing people there. In addition to my formal studies, I got to take some cooking classes which was fun. I also got to connect with family members I had never met before and am so grateful for that experience. I learned the most from my time in Thailand both from my research and through the experience of living and traveling completely on my own. It was intimidating at first, but now I feel more confident in my ability to explore the world independently and adapt to different cultures and environments.
Engaging in Experience
The opportunities for experiential learning at OSU are amazing. CAS has engaging professors who are invested in their student's learning and providing opportunities for hands-on experiences. Many classes offer labs where you get to get your hands dirty instead of being stuck in a classroom. I have also gotten to complete an early field experience at a local high school for my minor in Ag Education and work on campus at the Honey Bee Lab which has given me a lot of hands-on experience. I am grateful for everything I have learned in the classroom, but the experiential learning has helped give me confidence that I can complete the tasks I am learning about.
The advice that I would give to incoming students is look for the opportunities and take them. There is so much happening in CAS to get involved with. You will never have another opportunity to try so many new things and explore different interests. Show up and be engaged. It’s worth it.
