Following a national search, Dr. Steve Young has been named the new Director of the North Willamette Research and Extension Center, effective June 16.
Dr. Young brings a strong track record of strategic leadership and program development across research, extension, and federal service. He most recently served as a national program leader with the USDA Agricultural Research Service, where he guided national initiatives to strengthen agricultural research and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. Prior to that, he was the director of the Northeastern Integrated Pest Management Center at Cornell University, leading regional efforts to support sustainable agriculture through science-based pest management solutions.
Dr. Young earned his Ph.D. in soils and biogeochemistry from the University of California, Davis, a master’s degree in plant science from the University of Idaho, and a bachelor’s degree in horticulture from Washington State University. He also completed postdoctoral research at WSU’s Center for Precision Automated Agricultural Systems, where he explored biofuel cropping systems.
With previous faculty appointments at Utah State University and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Dr. Young brings a deep understanding of land-grant missions and a demonstrated ability to lead across research, teaching, and extension. His work has often pushed the boundaries of traditional agricultural sciences, integrating disciplines like engineering, computer science, and human nutrition to address complex challenges in natural and managed ecosystems.
As Director of NWREC, Dr. Young is poised to advance the Center’s role as a hub for innovation and community engagement in Oregon agriculture. His collaborative approach, combined with his broad experience across institutions and disciplines, positions him to lead with vision and impact.

The location, with its nearness to Portland, and programming will provide numerous opportunities to expand service and increase growth," Dr. Young said.
