SACNAS 2019 Conference Highlights

Earlier this month, members of the Oregon State University Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) chapter attended the National Diversity in STEM conference in Honolulu, Hawai’i.

There, students attended professional development workshops ranging from submitting competitive internship applications to the effects of climate change on the Pacific Islands; spoke at panel discussions, took field trips to various locations around O’ahu, meeting local wildlife; and presented posters and oral research to other attendees.

Excitingly, CAS Botany and Plant Pathology student Nick Carleson took away a national award for his oral graduate research presentation in Life Sciences - Genetics and Physiology. Carleson’s presentation was chosen out of hundreds of accepted abstracts. SACNAS has published a full list of Conference Presentation Awardees.

Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) is an inclusive organization dedicated to fostering the success of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans, from college students to professionals, in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in STEM.
