  Leadership Academy Newsletter, April 2020

An Update...

Just like all of you, we went into Spring Break and the start of Spring term with the uncertainty and threat of the COVID-19 virus. The Leadership Academy, the College, and OSU are committed to adapting to the situation and continuing to provide our students with a nimble, dedicated response so that we can continue our mission of teaching, research, and meeting the needs of our community. You can find out more about what OSU is doing to continue teaching here.

OSU responded promptly to this global crisis with a pledge to its students:
  • All undergraduate and graduate students who are on an approved path to graduate in Spring 2020 will receive academic assistance to graduate on time or scholarships to cover subsequent terms
  • Course drop deadlines have been extended by an additional week
  • Course S/U grading option has been extended through week 10
  • Emergency grading has been implemented in the event the instructor is not able to validly assess student performance
  • Tuition freeze for currently enrolled undergraduates for Summer session and the 2020-2021 academic year
The Leadership Academy moved to a synchronous online delivery platform incorporating Zoom and Canvas technology. This allows us to deliver content during our regular meeting time via video, with the ability to assign students to breakout rooms, utilize white boards for brainstorming, conduct polls, and screen sharing for guest presentations.

Our hearts are with those affected by this virus, and we will continue to do everything we can to keep our students, faculty, staff, and community safe.

Deadline Extended!

Although applications have been steadily coming in, we recognize that students have a lot to balance this term. This has been a time for adjustment, adaptability, and new ways of learning. We want every student to have the opportunity to apply for the Leadership Academy, so we have extended the deadline to April 17th.

Please continue to send your nominations to the Leadership Academy Coordinator, Faith Vawter until April 17th.

We can't wait to announce the 2020-2021 cohort soon!-->

Nominating Committee Established

Under the direction of Department Head and Academy Co-Director Jonathan Velez and Board President Ken Munson, the Leadership Academy established a nominating committee this past fall. The committee has reviewed nominations solicited from the Board and is in the process of narrowing the list to approximately three candidates. Those candidates will be contacted within the next month regarding their interest and will be invited to our annual meeting in June. A huge thank you to committee members Karla Wachter of Northwest Farm Credit Services, Carl Jones of MARS Research Corporation, Mallory Phelan of  AgLink, and Joe Newton of Lone Rock Timber.

Stay tuned for the announcement of our newest members!-->

  Scholarship Spotlight: Otillia Schreuder

Crop and Soil Science student Otillia Schreuder took advantage of a Leadership Academy scholarship to attend the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America Conference annual meeting in San Antonio Texas with her faculty mentor Megan Mobley.

Otillia reflected on the event, stating "This addresses my goal to improve the personalization and connections my education is able to have in my life. It will also help me to align my career aspects with modern market demand through the experience I can gain from attending a professional conference; it will also allow me to further understand the new systems of agriculture being used and developed. This conference will also allow me to work on my networking skills by interacting with business professionals in a hybrid academic/work environment. This experience stands to furthers my goals to make new professional and personal connections both in my field of study and in general."

Students across the Academy are eager to use scholarship funds to further their leadership development, thanks to generous donations from Northwest Farm Credit Services, Bayer Crop Science, CHS, Inc., and Nutrien Ag Solutions and Nutrien Ag Solutions-Tangent. -->

Alumna Spotlight: Riane Miles

"Building confidence in networking is where I experienced the most growth. Challenge yourself to go outside of your comfort zone! That’s when you will truly experience personal growth. Invest in your cohort members, professors, and mentors; don’t always focus on what you can “get,” but also what you can give."

-Riane Miles, a 2015 graduate of OSU in Agricultural Sciences -->
