Station Onion Information
The Oregon State University Malheur Experiment Station routinely conducts irrigation, storage, weed control, and variety research for onion production. Onions are a very important crop locally and all the information that the experiment station learns about onions is shared with local growers.
The Malheur Experiment Station has been an early leader in developing drip irrigation for onion production. Recent work has included irrigation management for drip-irrigated onions, an evaluation of onion harvesting methods, post emergence weed control, soil fumigation trails, Onion E. Coli effect studies, and onion thrips control. Multi-year trials have tested over fifty different varieties of onions, supplied by 16 different companies. Onions from various trials are compared for yield, grade, harvest maturity, and storability.
