In onion crops, weeds (any unwanted vegetation) compete with onions for light, nutrients, and water and consequently decrease onion yield (Organic Weed ControlSchonbeck, 2011). There are many effective management practices that can successfully manage weeds. Synthetic herbicides have been shown to effectively control weeds while promoting optimal onion growth, quality, and yield. The growth of weeds can also be reduced by drip irrigation because of timely herbicide applications and less of the soil surface is irrigated. Some growers practice organic farming (excluding the use of synthetic herbicides) to manage weeds by cultivation and hand weeding alone. Both conventional and organic methods can be practical and sustainable solutions, depending on the needs of your farm and marketing opportunities.
