General Information About the Workshop

Slugs are among the most destructive pests in western Oregon grass and legume seed cropping systems, causing an estimated $60 million in crop losses each year (Salisbury, 2015). The gray field slug (Deroceras reticulatum) is the most significant species affecting these systems. Other invasive European slug species also threaten grass and legume seed crops, including marsh slug (Deroceras leave) and several Arion species such as brown-banded slug (Arion circumscriptus) and the dusky slug (Arion subfuscus). Correct identification of slug species is essential for effective management because control tools vary in their efficacy among species. Understanding slug biology and behavior, along with using available technologies for monitoring slug activity, is crucial for decision making process. By implementing IPM strategies, grass and legume seed producers can more effectively and sustainably manage slug populations, reduce environmental impact, and lower overall production costs.
