Strip-till Sweet Corn Production: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Improving Profitability

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Evaluate agronomic aspects associated with strip-till production: specifically machinery improvement, seed-bed preparation quality, corn stand establishment, insect pest abundance, soil moisture, sweet corn yield and quality, and comparative tillage costs (J. Luna and M Staben)
  • Evaluate the potential to use pre-sidedress nitrogen testing (PSNT) to optimize N application in strip-till sweet corn (D. Hemphill)
  • Develop cost-effective weed control practices within the strip-till system. (E. Peachey)
  • Evaluate the impact of strip-tillage systems on insect pest management and validate area-wide pest monitoring program (D. McGrath).
