This grant program provides competitive grants to non-Federal researchers working to benefit U.S. fishermen and fisheries by the development of improved fishing practices and innovative gear technologies. This Program seeks to support the development and testing of fishing gears and approaches that can be applied and used in fisheries to reduce bycatch and address the MSA requirements to minimize bycatch and habitat impacts. The NMFS Office of Sustainable Fisheries (OSF) proposes to fund applied management projects in four high-priority areas: Innovative equipment to reduce bycatch; improving understanding and reduction of post-release and other indirect mortality; developing techniques to reduce interactions between fishing gears and corals, sponges, and other structure-forming invertebrates; conducting comprehensive international bycatch analyses to inform conservation engineering in US commericial, recreational and aquaculture fisheries. The earliest start date for projects will be July 1, 2018.
