OSU MANRRS receives awards in three out of three contests at Regional Workshop.

Nine Oregon State University (OSU) MANRRS Chapter members and their Advisor, Wanda Crannell, traveled to Davis, CA for the annual Region VI Cluster Workshop hosted by the UC Davis MANRRS Chapter Nov. 10-11, 2017.  More chapters were present at this year’s Region VI Workshop than any other previous (UC Davis, OSU, University of Arizona, CalPoly Pomona, CalPoly San Luis Obispo, Colorado State, and University of Nevada, Reno). Kudos to UC Davis Chapter for working to expand Chapter involvement and thanks for a terrific weekend of professional development, networking, friendship, and MANRRS-family building.

Each Chapter prepared and presented a presentation on their Chapter’s accomplishments and future goals and OSU staffed a recruitment table.  Students participated in three contests: Impromptu Speaking, Elevator Speech Contest and Interview Contest.

Angel Torres (OSU Chapter President) and Mariah Crannell (previous Chapter Community Rep.) were among 6 selected finalist moving on to the Interview Panel Contest, and Angel Torres receiving 2nd place overall.  Thanks to the professionals from BASF, Bayer, Dow AgroSciences, Land O’Lakes, and Prudential for providing position descriptions, evaluating cover letters and resumes, and serving as interview judges.  Additional professionals from USDA, John Deere, and Co-Bank Farm Credit, joined others for the Opportunity Fair and Networking Lunch.

Ruben Lopez-Carrillo (freshman in ANS) and Angel Torres (senior in CSS) competed in the Impromptu Speaking Contest, with Angel winning first place and moving on to National Finals to be held in North Carolina, April 4-7, 2018. Karina Heredia (COB Pre-Accountancy sophomore) and Johannah Hamilton competed in the Elevator Speech Contest with Johannah winning regional 2ndplace.

Graduate students Johannah Hamilton (GTA Co-Advisor pursuing PhD in Public Policy) and Jasmine Brown (MS candidate in Forest Ecosystem and Society) joined CSU and UD Davis graduate students on a Graduate Students’ Perspective workshop panel providing encouragement and advice for undergraduates seeking additional education.

Students attended other workshops entitled: How to Ace an Interview, The Importance of Soft Skills and Personal Branding, Getting LinkedIn, How Excel can Excel your Career, What Employers Want from Candidates, and Dimensions of Diversity. New members including 4 OSU students (Jasmin, Celine, Gloria and Ruben) received their MANRRS pins at the New Members pinning ceremony.
