KBREC Hosts Jamaican Student Interns

The Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center (KBREC), a research and experimental station of Oregon State University welcomes two students from Jamaica. The students are spending the summer at the station as part of their requirements to complete their BSc degrees. Kwame Stephenson and Alex McBean are final year students at the College of Agriculture Science  and Education (CASE) in Portland, Jamaica.

This is the first year the station has hosted an internship program for international students and they will work under the mentorship of Dr. Everald McLennon. Dr. McLennon, who is also an alumni of CASE and was instrumental in getting the students here is thrilled that the station can, not only provide  hands-on experiences for the students, but invaluable skills like time management, communication, working with others, networking and problem-solving. “Hosting the students helps us to prepare and train the next generation of agriculture professionals” says Dr McLennon. “The varied research projects at the station will expose the students to new situations, challenges and perspectives and I am thrilled and  looking forward to the  impact the experience will have on their growth and professional development. One thing I have noticed from the students so far is a willingness to learn and this is a great attribute to get one’s career kickstarted and a valuable addition to their resumes.”

During the internship the students will gain experience and exposure  in applied research with projects relating to industrial hemp, cereal grains, dandelion, alternative and native grass seed crops, and potato variety trials and seed production. In addition to exposing the students to American agricultural production systems and processes, the students  will also have opportunities to engage with local American cultures and activities.

“It’s not often the branch stations, off-campus, get an opportunity to host student interns from foreign countries.  I couldn’t be more excited to host Alex and Kwame. I’m confident the experience will broaden their knowledge and applied field skills as well as enrich the faculty and staff at KBREC to learn of their culture and background.”
Brian Charlton, Station director

“It’s been nice to get to work with the College of Agriculture, Science and Education in Jamaica.   Hosting Alex and Kwame at the Klamath Basin station is not only a great experience for them, but I suspect will enrich the community as well.  I applaud Everald for championing this opportunity.”
Dave Stone, Associate Dean of International Programs
