Accelerated Master’s Program in Statistics
Oregon State University has launched an innovative Accelerated Master’s Platform (AMP) in Statistics, offering a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to fast-track their education and earn both a bachelor's and master's degree in statistics in an efficient and streamlined manner. This program allows qualified students to begin graduate coursework while still completing their undergraduate degree, enabling them to apply up to 12 credits of graduate-level coursework toward both degrees. By integrating advanced statistical training into their undergraduate curriculum, students can develop key analytical and problem-solving skills, making them highly competitive in data-driven industries.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the AMP in Statistics accommodates students from a variety of academic backgrounds, including those with interests in fields such as data science, engineering, and natural sciences. Graduates of the program will be well-prepared for careers in industry, government, or academia, where there is growing demand for experts capable of making informed decisions based on statistical analysis. This accelerated path not only saves time and reduces educational costs but also provides an excellent foundation for students looking to pursue further research or professional opportunities in statistics.
The AMP Statistics program is pleased to announce they have welcomed their first student into the program starting this fall. Matthew Taylor is a student coming from the biological data science program, “It was during my first term at Oregon State that I realized I wanted to pursue statistics. At the time, I was a biology major, but I enjoyed data analysis so much that I switched to the BDS program. The BDS program has allowed me to preserve my interest in living systems, while also providing me with education in quantitative skills relevant to many other subjects. Now, going into my fourth year (and first year of the AMP program), I am very excited to begin my graduate studies. The program will help me develop the skills required to be a competitive statistician and will save me an entire year in terms of time and cost of attendance. I hope that anyone interested in statistics who is eager to enter the professional world will check out the program.” The Department of Statistics is thrilled to see such interdisciplinary interest with the program and wishes him the best.
To apply for the Accelerated Master’s Platform (AMP) in Statistics at Oregon State University, students must first meet the program’s eligibility requirements. Prospective applicants should typically begin planning in their junior year and consult with both their undergraduate academic advisor and the graduate program coordinator in the Department of Statistics to ensure they meet the necessary requirements. Students will submit a formal application through the Graduate School, typically by the spring term of their junior year.
Several faculty members in the Department of Statistics are available to assist students throughout the application process. Faculty such as the AMP program coordinator, as well as professors specializing in fields like data science, applied statistics, and biostatistics, are valuable resources for students as they navigate course selection and research opportunities. Reaching out to faculty early in the process can also help students align their academic and professional goals with the program’s offerings, ensuring they get the most out of the accelerated path. For personalized guidance, students are encouraged to contact the Graduate Program Director or the AMP Coordinator within the department.
