Dr Ralf Doering, courtesy faculty at the department of applied economics at OSU and instructor for ‚Marine Economics’ this spring, was elected as Vice-chair of the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries. He is head of the economics unit at the Institute of Sea Fisheries of the Johann Heinrich v. Thuenen-Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries in Hamburg, Germany. He advises the German government and the European Commission in all fisheries related issues and issues of the implementation of the ecosystem based approach in marine ecosystems.
The Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) is the advisory committee of the European Commission for the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) of the European Union. The Committee has actually 32 members who were appointed as independent experts by the European Commission. The members are highly qualified scientific experts particularly in the application of marine and fisheries biology, fishing gear technology, fisheries economics, fisheries governance, ecosystem effects of fisheries, aquaculture or similar disciplines. The European Commission consults the STECF in order to develop the CFP policy on matters pertaining to the conservation and management of living marine resources, including biological, economic, environmental, social and technical considerations. The Committee is appointed for a three-year period and elects a board with a chair and two vice-chairs.
