Dr. Shawn Donkin is Professor of Animal and Rangeland Sciences, Associate Dean of Research in the College of Agricultural Research, and Associate Director of the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. He earned a BSc in Agricultural Sciences from McGill University (Montreal), MS in Dairy and Animal Science from The Pennsylvania State University, and a PhD in Dairy Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was a member of the faculty of Purdue University for 26 years and a member of Purdue College of Agriculture leadership team for the 10 years before joining Oregon State University in 2021.
Dr. Donkin is an internationally-recognized researcher and scholar in the area of nutritional biochemistry and metabolism related to food animal production, animal well-being, and human health. His research program, which is both applied and basic in scope, has created knowledge of optimal health, productivity, and feeding management strategies for transition and lactating dairy cattle and uncovered knowledge of the underlying biology of energy and nutrient metabolism in mammalian liver during health and metabolic disease. He has authored or co-authored over 110 refereed publications, in excess of 130 abstracts, 16 research reports, and 6 book chapters and attracted over $19M in research support from federal sources (USDA, NSF, NIH) and industry partners during his career.
