• (2015) Integrating Integrated Pest Management Insects, weeds and plant pathogens are problems that confront farmers in trying to grow a successful crop. Insect pests can defoliate crop plants. Weeds can outcompete crops for light, water and nutrients. Pathogens can cause disease epidemics that destroy entire crops.
• (2015) Monitoring diseases in the field Diseases can reduce the yield and nutritional quality of crops. Vectors are organisms that transmit pathogens that cause diseases and can also threaten crops. Some important vectors of plant pathogens in the Pacific Northwest include the potato psyllid that vectors the bacteria that causes Zebra Chip disease in potatoes and onion thrips that vector Iris yellow spot virus in onions.
• (2015) How to Identify a Plant or Weed When you want to identify a plant (weed), the first thing you need to do is take a picture of it. Then, collect and press the entire plant, if possible, and record information about it. Record where you collected the plant, the date you collected it, and any key characteristics you observe about the plant.

• (2015) Detecting Plant Diseases in the Lab The Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Hermiston, Oregon has a full- service, plant pathology diagnostic lab that serves the growing needs of the agricultural community in the Columbia Basin. The lab receives all types of plant disease samples including diseases of potatoes and other vegetables, trees, and ornamentals, and diseases spread by insect vectors. We use a variety of testing methods, ranging from traditional culturing techniques for fungi and bacteria to advanced molecular techniques that use pathogen DNA sequences to identify pathogens and diagnose diseases.

It is always best (if possible) to collect the entire plant specimen at peak production, so you have included the roots, flowers and potentially the seeds of the plant.
• (2019) An Integrated Pest Management Strategic Plan for Treasure Valley Onions: Oregon and Idaho (2019) Growers, commodity-group representatives, pest-control advisors, university specialists, and other technical experts from the Treasure Valley in Oregon and Idaho provide an overview of onion production. They identify pest management priorities and lay a foundation for increased use of Integrated Pest Management in onions. They identify critical production aspects of this crop, and describe the biology and life cycle of onion pests. Authors organize management practices and challenges by crop life stage and describe whole-season management practices and constraints.

• (2016) Internal Dry Scale and Associated Bulb Rots of Onion Onion growers and packers in the Pacific Northwest have observed a problem on red, white, and yellow cultivars: internal dry scale. Bulbs affected by internal dry scale have dead inner scales that are susceptible to fungi, bacteria, and yeasts, which can lead to rot. In addition to outlining the incidences and symptoms of internal dry scale and associated bulb rots of onion, this publication discusses the factors that contribute to it and suggests tactics for limiting it.
• (2021) Potato Psyllid Vector of Zebra Chip Disease in the Pacific Northwest This publication addresses the emergent issue in the Pacific Northwest of a potato infection called zebra chip disease, vectored by the potato psyllid. Includes information on the bacterium, the biology of the vector, description of damage from both vector and non-vector psyllids, and most current research on management.
