Mission Statement
To advance scientific knowledge in agriculture, natural resources and biofortified crops, and support and educate our diverse local clientele and community in the areas of irrigated agriculture, plant breeding, natural resources, human health and youth development.
Here at the Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center, known to insiders as HAREC, we serve nearly 500,000 acres of irrigated agriculture in Oregon and Washington's Columbia Basin. The center concentrates on discovery and implementation of agricultural and horticultural opportunities and provides solutions to production restraints.
Research at HAREC emphasizes identification of new crops or and production practices, plant breeding and varietal evaluation including nutritional contents, integrated pest management of insects and insect transmitted diseases, plant disease control and environmental issues. In addition, an emphasis on stream ecology investigates aspects related to salmon.
As a regional hub for innovation, the center is dedicated to discovering, developing, and implementing new agricultural and horticultural opportunities while delivering practical solutions to the production challenges faced by growers.
Research and Extension faculty, staff, and trained volunteers collaborate closely with local producers, industry partners, community organizations, and stakeholders. Together, we deliver educational workshops, hands‑on activities, and services tailored to the unique agricultural systems, natural resources, and communities of our region.
As part of Oregon State University’s land‑grant mission, we are committed to conducting high‑impact research and providing accessible, research‑based education. Our work supports economic vitality, strengthens community well‑being, and promotes environmental health throughout the region.
