Dr. Steve Culman named Director of Central Oregon Agricultural Research and Extension Center

Following a national search, Dr. Steve Culman has been named the new Director of the Central Oregon Agricultural Research and Extension Center, effective October 1.

Dr. Culman brings a wealth of experience and expertise in soil health, crop management, and agricultural sustainability to this vital role. Most recently an Endowed Chair of Soil Health in Potato Cropping Systems at Washington State University, his research focuses on improving soil health through management practices that enrich nutrient cycling to enhance crop production and environmental outcomes. His collaborative, field-based research involves working directly with growers to implement practical solutions for modern agricultural challenges.

Before joining Washington State University in 2022, Dr. Culman served for nine years as a state specialist in soil fertility at Ohio State University. His academic journey also includes postdoctoral research positions at the University of California, Davis, and Michigan State University. He holds both an M.S. in Soil Science and a Ph.D. in Agronomy from Cornell University.

Dr. Staci Simonich, Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences, said, “Dr. Culman’s deep expertise in soil health, particularly in the context of diverse cropping systems, will drive innovative research and solutions for the challenges facing Central Oregon agriculture. His proven track record of collaboration with growers and applied research will be invaluable in this role, and we are excited to see the new heights the research station will reach under his leadership.”

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jeremiah Dung for his outstanding service as interim director. His leadership and dedication during this transitional period have been instrumental in maintaining the station’s important work and ensuring a smooth transition.
