President Biden Announces Key Nominees

We are delighted that President Biden nominated Lisa T. Ballance, of Oregon State University, to chair the Marine Mammal Commission.

At Oregon State, Lisa serves as Director of Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute, Endowed Chair of Marine Mammal Research, and Professor of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences.

As a researcher and teacher, Lisa has long served with dedication and distinction.

She was Chief Scientist of NOAA’s Eastern Tropical Pacific Dolphin Research Program, which provided the scientific basis for the “Dolphin Safe” label found on tuna cans in supermarkets all over this country. She has published more than 150 scientific papers, book chapters, and technical reports. She regularly gives invited presentations at professional conferences, universities, public lectures, and policy-related briefings. And she has mentored post-doctorate, doctorate, masters, and undergraduate honors students.

Lisa’s career embodies our university’s pursuit of environmentally sustainable discovery and impact, benefitting our state, nation and world.

I congratulate her on this nomination — the latest honor in an already tremendous life of science.
